I was more than disappointed by the Sci-Fi channel's movie version of Ursula K. Leguin's Earthsea novels. Apparently, so was the author, though I think maybe the skin-color problem isn't as big an issue as she made it out to be. People do tend to see the characters they read about as they wish to, after all.
Anyway, some of my favorite books were turned into a meaningless Harry Potter-esque hodge-podge. (No offense intended to those of you who like the wiz-kid.) Where was the power and the depth of the stories, their shadow and light? Where the strength of their symbols? And what was with the sex (albeit fairly tame) elements? These were originally books for kids!
