Art School Girls, a poem

Art School Girls

Art school girls were much too
full of themselves and the discovery
of their talents to be
introspective. Brash, ready

to hurt without thinking,
to throw themselves at their canvases
in crimson and ultramarine,
they spoke loudly to hear

themselves over their own chaos.
Everything broken could be put
back together and this week’s
theories debated with this week’s

boyfriend. How could I resist?
I who pondered each brush stroke,
each word, who knew the fragility
of what talent I had — I was

not for such nor they for me.
